Guna Caves of Kodaikanal: Everything You Need to Know

Deep within the misty hills of Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu, lies a place that whispers tales of the past and ignites the imagination – the Guna Caves. Also known as Devil's Kitchen, these captivating caverns have captivated visitors for centuries, offering a glimpse into a world of ancient formations and intriguing stories.

The Guna Caves (Guna Cave) boast a rich history, dating back to their discovery in 1821 by British officer B.S. Ward. Initially named Devil's Kitchen, the caves remained relatively unknown until the late 1980s. However, their true fame arrived with the release of the popular Tamil film "Guna" in 1991 starring Kamal Haasan. The movie, featuring scenes shot within the caves, catapulted them into the spotlight, forever linking their name to the film's title.

Guna Caves gained even more popularity with the release of the Malayalam survival movie "Manjummel Boys" in 2024. The film follows a group of friends from a small town called Manjummel near Kochi, who decide to vacation in Kodaikanal. Their plans are disrupted when one of them becomes trapped in the Guna Caves.

The film was theatrically released in February 2024 in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, receiving critical acclaim. It became the first Malayalam film to earn over ₹200 crores. Following its success, especially in South India, particularly Kerala and Tamil Nadu, thousands have visited Guna Caves, making it one of the top tourist destinations in Kodaikanal.
